TikTok’s New Comment Features: What Food Brands Should Try Next

A recipe video can leave viewers with plenty to say. Someone wants an ingredient substitute. Another has tried the dish with a different sauce. Someone else wants to show how their version turned out.

TikTok’s latest comment updates give these responses more room. For food brands, they offer new possibilities for involving audiences in the content you create.

What has TikTok announced?

In its 3 September 2026 announcement, TikTok introduced several updates:

  • Voice Comments: Audio replies of up to 60 seconds, rolling out globally over the following month to accounts aged 18 and older.
  • Comment Polls: Creators can add polls to their own videos with up to five options and a voting timeframe. TikTok says these are available globally.
  • Photo Carousel Comments: Up to nine photos in a single comment, rolling out globally over the following month.
  • Live Photo Comments: Photo replies with a brief burst of motion, which TikTok says are available globally.

Give viewers a specific reason to respond

Our recommendation is to build each interaction around something your audience already cares about.

For a food brand, that might be choosing tomorrow’s dinner, improving a familiar recipe or sharing a dish they are proud of. A clear invitation makes participation easier.

A sauce brand could publish a quick meal idea and ask viewers which dish they want to see next. A rice brand could invite people to share a photo of the meal they made using its recipe. A bakery could ask followers to choose the next baking tutorial.

Each prompt should connect directly to the video and give the team something useful to respond to.

Let a poll shape your next recipe

A simple starting point is to give viewers a choice between three recipes you are ready to produce.

For example, after demonstrating a sambal base, ask whether the next video should feature sambal prawns, fried rice or a vegetarian dish.

Then make the winning recipe and acknowledge the audience’s choice. This gives the interaction a visible outcome and creates a natural connection between posts.

Treat the result as feedback from participating viewers. It can guide a content experiment, but it does not establish demand across your entire customer base.

Invite customers to show their own versions

Food is personal. Two people following the same recipe may use different ingredients, portions or plating styles.

Photo replies offer a way to explore those variations. Try a straightforward invitation: “Made this recipe? Show us how you served it.”

Use the responses to start conversations. Ask about an unexpected ingredient or help someone troubleshoot a result. If you want to feature a customer’s image in a separate brand post or advertisement, ask for permission and agree on how it will be used.

Plan time for the conversation

Before encouraging more responses, decide who will review them and how the team will handle questions.

Audio and photo replies need attention as well as text comments. A viewer asking about an ingredient should receive a useful answer. Repeated questions may also point to a missing step in the original video or an idea for a follow-up.

Start with one format on a small number of posts. Track participation, useful questions and the time required to respond. Where relevant, also track visits to a recipe page or product page. More comments alone do not demonstrate more sales.

The most useful experiment is one your team can learn from and sustain.

At iCookAsia Digital, we recommend planning the audience interaction alongside the video concept. Decide what you want people to contribute, how you will respond and what happens next.
